Law enforcement agencies around the country use Encase from Guidance Software to forensically image computer disks in investigations and prosecutions. This means that defense experts need to own this $3,000+ program rather than a less expensive alternative. However, in Washington State it appears that is no longer the case.

It's good to see one of the few remaining independent time, billing and practice management software companies continue to roll out improvements to a product that has earned a reputation of being rock solid.
In today's challenging legal employment climate, potential employees (whether lawyers or staff), need to carefully think about every thing that can potentially affect their job prospects. This includes body piercings and tattoos which seem to be the current craze. Like diamonds, tattoos are forever without expensive and painful removal. But can tattoos and piercings actually affect your job chances? It appears that there is now information to support this belief.
Every firm or solo should have a website or blog (or both) but make it more than a “brochure.â€
Lawyers are afloat in a sea of paper presenting challenges in both short term and long term storage, being able to find information quickly and reducing malpractice risks from handling all of this paper. As firms move more and more to a paperless environment (or at least a reduced paper environment), scanning has become an integral piece of accomplishing these goals. In this session, attorney Nerino Petro and legal technology consultant Britt Lorish Knuttgen help guide you through the maze of scanners available, including desktop scanners, multi-function machines, flatbeds and portable scanners, giving you practical application examples for each. They also focus on having internal scanning policies and standards, and enforcing those for consistency within your firm. Also included in the discussion are software products to accompany scanners for maximum benefit. These products include OCR (optical character recognition) software, as well as document management systems and PDF software. The importance of scanning to searchable PDF is also explained and highlighted. The standing room only crowd was treated to a number of product demonstrations during this presentation, and left with a better understanding of how to implement a scanning workflow for better paperless practices. Both Nerino and Britt will be speaking again at ABA TECHSHOW 2010, and Britt is currently a member of the ABA TECHSHOW Planning Board.

A number of digital pen products let you capture your handwriting in electronic form. Typically with these products, you have to download the handwritten information onto your computer before you can view it on the screen. A lot of times that works fine—but what if you’re in a meeting or presentation and want to have on-the-fly handwritten annotations or drawings appear on the screen?
If you’d like to talk about your firm’s technology—what’s working, what isn’t, what’s keeping you stuck, or what you’re trying to build next—there are two paths:
Path #1 (fastest):
Schedule a Meeting with CenCom Technologies using this link or use the contact form.
This is ideal if you’re ready for consulting, implementation, support, or a strategic review.
Path #2 (classic):
If you prefer email or phone first, that’s fine too—some habits are worth keeping.

Either way, the goal is the same: get you to a clear plan that improves your systems, reduces ongoing friction, and makes technology a competitive advantage instead of a recurring distraction.
