A post on the Lawyer Marketing Blog believes that marketing is more important than the accounting and management aspects of running a law firm. In his post Marketing, More Important Than Accounting, Finance, and Management, Gyi Tsakalakis of AttorneySync ("legal web strategy professionals") advocates this premise based on an article in the New York Times and his own experience working with law firms.
According to Gyi:
In my experience with my own business, as well as, working with legal professionals who are trying to get their small businesses off the ground, out of the above-listed hats, marketing continues to be the most important.
He believes that while the things like accounting, finance and management are important, marketing is king as a way to drive new business to the firm.
While marketing may mean many different things to different folks, in the end, it comes down to generating new business. Furthermore, in my humble opinion, as long as you can provide excellent service and/or customer experience, the more business you can generate, the healthier your small business will be.
Interesting proposition, but one I'm not in total agreement with based on my own experience. In order to handle increased business, you need to have a firm understanding and handle on managing your practice including allocation of time and resources. I do agree that marketing is important though and that too many lawyers fail to understand its importance as well as the need to be continuously marketing themselves and their firms. What do you think? Is he right? Give it some thought and perhaps you'll agree with his premise.
